It's often said that building a strong future starts with building strong communities. Community colleges in the United States strive to do just that. Founded in 1901, Joliet Junior College in Illinois is the oldest existing public two-year college, and the community colleges system has continued to grow since then. In the 1960's community colleges became a national network and today there are over 1,100 community colleges in the US, some of which have multiple campuses in order to make education accessible to as many students as possible.
But don't get confused: community colleges sometimes go by different titles including institute, technical college, community college, junior college or simply college. These mostly 2-year institutions vary in focus, with some offering general education in a variety of fields, while others provide industry- or cultural-specific programs (such as Tribal colleges). However, community colleges in the US share the goal of responding to the training needs of vocationally-oriented secondary school graduates. With associate's and sometimes even bachelor's degrees, as well as both academic and pre-professional diplomas and certificates, the community college system in the US is a great option for building your future.
